Best Northern Soul Records Ever by Terry Christian

Forgive me , I’ve been listening to northern soul for 35 years. It was hammered down our throats at our local youth club in old Trafford... ...When what we really wanted was Roxy music and Bowie , I even went to Wigan Casino once back in 1980 to the hostile glares of the Soul fraternity who looked at me and my mates dressed in our Quadrophenia style mod boy outfits and scorned our naive fashionista behinds out of the building. As a teenager I listened to Wigan Casino oldies DJ Dave Evison on Piccadilly Radio in Manchester on Mike Shaft’s ...

Fast forward to the past: An interview with Keb Darge

WHEN Keb Darge was a young man living in Elgin, north east Scotland, Saturday meant one thing: the northern soul all-nighter at the Wigan Casino. By ROBERT SPELLMAN The sudden and bizarre craze for lost US soul and R&B recordings and the curious dance and fashion modes that went with it played out across the dancefloors of Manchester, Blackpool, Stoke and Wigan for entire weekends in the 70s, and Darge was transfixed. When the "first wave" of the scene ended late in the decade, his musical journey and career as a record collector, trendsetter and DJ began in earnest, and ...

Samantha’s – It had to start somewhere for so many people

Samantha's was an upstairs venue above the Silver Blades Ice Skating Rink in Queens Road, Sheffield. A room about three times as long as was wide, it had a relatively small dance floor, with a bar at the far end and ample seating. As you climbed the stairs and entered the room, the decks were on your left, readily accessable for requests. No stage to climb up onto! Unfortunately, the decks were so close to the dance floor that any enthusiastic "stomping" resulted in the record jumping... 'Elusive' by Babe Ruth often caused problems! There was a second room too, ...

Glenn Walker-Foster

Please visit Glenn's Mixcloud "Northern Soul Sessions" page here  Profile My DJ career started in 1972 whilst at public school in Blackpool , some of the older boys at school were going to The Torch in Stoke On Trent and The Highland Room at the Blackpool Mecca which sparked my interest in Northern Soul and Tamla Motown. I began listening to Emperor Rosko and Andy Peebles Soul Train on the radio and in fact remember clearly hiding under the bedsheets at night as a young lad with a tiny transistor radio , a torch , pen and paper hastily scribbling record ...

Six quickies with Glenn Walker-Foster

1) So Glenn, you have been DJing since 72, that’s a hell of a long time, how has the digital revolution impacted on the way you DJ? The digital revolution has impacted in many ways on the way I DJ in all forms of music with the exception of Northern Soul. It has made remixing records easier and making your own productions a whole lot easier . Of course Northern Soul has a policy of vinyl only in most venues so that particular format has changed little in it’s 40 odd year run . Of course as a Radio DJ ...
